Roast My Resume: What a Resume Roast Is and Why It Works
Updated 2026-10-12
A resume roast is blunt, funny feedback that points out what is weak in your resume, followed by specific fixes. On Resume Roast you upload your resume, get the roast and a set of fix-it tips for free, and can then unlock a full rewrite tailored to a job posting if you want one.
The jokes are there for a reason. Polite feedback like “consider strengthening your bullet points” is easy to nod at and ignore. “Your bullet points read like a hostage note from your old job description” is harder to forget, and it is backed by a fix you can apply in five minutes.
What a resume roast actually is
Think of it as a review from a blunt recruiter friend who has seen too many resumes and has stopped being diplomatic about it. The roast part names the problems in plain, memorable terms. The useful part is the list of specific issues and fixes that comes with it.
A good roast is about the resume, never the person. It makes fun of “synergy” and three-page skill lists, not your background, age or identity. If feedback only stings and does not tell you what to change, it is not a roast. It is just mean.
What our roast checks
Resume Roast reads the text of your resume and roasts the specific things in it, not generic resume jokes. Then it gives you a set of tips, each with a short diagnosis and a concrete fix based on your actual content.
- Buzzwords and clichés: “results-driven”, “synergy”, “passionate team player”
- Vague bullets that list duties and never say what happened
- Missing results or scale where your resume hints at them
- Padding: filler skills, old roles taking too much space, sections nobody needs
- Formatting leftovers and structure problems that make the page hard to scan
- Weak verbs that make your role sound smaller (or bigger) than it was
Sample roast lines, with the fixes
Here is the flavor, using made-up resumes. Each roast line comes with the fix that follows it.
- “You describe yourself as ‘detail-oriented’ two lines above a typo in your own job title.” Fix: proofread out loud and cut the adjective. Let the clean page prove it.
- “Your skills section lists ‘Microsoft Word’ and ‘Internet’. Bold of you to admit you can open things.” Fix: list the specific tools the job asks for that you actually use.
- “Every bullet starts with ‘Responsible for’, which is a great way to describe a job you were near.” Fix: start with the verb for what you did.
- “Your summary could belong to anyone on Earth, and possibly a few pets.” Fix: lead with your role and two real strengths.

Why roasting works as feedback
Most resume feedback is either too gentle to act on or too generic to apply. Friends say “looks great!” because they like you. Templates say “use action verbs” without telling you which bullet is the problem. A roast is specific by design: to make a joke about a line, it has to point at that line.
Humor also lowers the defensiveness that makes criticism hard to hear. It is easier to laugh at “three buzzwords in a trench coat” and then fix your summary than to read a cold list of shortcomings. The laugh gets you to read the feedback. The fix is what you keep.
How to get your resume roasted
Upload your resume as a PDF or Word file, or paste the text. The roast and the fix-it tips are free, and you also get LinkedIn-ready copy built from your resume with the tips applied. If you are applying for a specific role, paste the job posting too.
If you want the work done for you, you can unlock an AI rewrite after watching one short ad. Paste the job posting and it rewrites your summary, bullets and keywords for that job, using only what your resume already says. You can download it as a PDF, or, if you uploaded a Word file, in your own Word design.
What a roast will not do
It is an AI review, not a human recruiter, and it cannot promise interviews. Nothing can. It also will not invent achievements for you: if your resume has no numbers, the rewrite will not make some up, and the tips will tell you where finding your real ones would help.
Treat the roast like any honest feedback: take what is useful, check it against what you know about your field, and then go fix the bullet that starts with “Responsible for”.
